Oliver Sin: Expressive Portraits in Charcoals

Internationally, award-winning, California artist, Oliver Sin is coming back to Fort Worth in early June for a three-day workshop teaching the art of expressive charcoal portraiture. In this workshop, students will learn the techniques of mastering expressive portraiture drawings with vine charcoal, charcoal pencils on drawing papers and tonal papers. Oliver is an amazing instructor with a strong knowledge in breaking down the drawing process for his students. in his step-by-step process, Oliver focuses on understanding the structure of the head in term of shapes, planes change, and value by using lines and value rendering. Understanding the planes will increase a student’s accuracy and knowledge in effectively rendering a component portrait. Students will be working both from live models and photo reference. All levels are welcome.

About Oliver Sin:
Oliver graduated from Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California with a BFA in Illustration. Right after graduation in 1996, Oliver embarked on an art career as a computer game concept artist at LucasArts. In 2001, he was asked to come back to Academy of Art University as a professor for the School of Fine Arts and 2D Animation. He has been teaching at Academy of Art ever since joining their talented team.
Oliver was drawn to art as a little boy and started drawing at the age of 3. He found portraiture to be his favorite form of expression which he constantly practices. Since 2011, he has gained mentorships from some of the most distinguished artists in the world of representational art: Zhaoming Wu, Henry Yan and Chung-Wei Chien. Their tireless guidance urged Oliver to put great efforts in capturing fleeting human expressions and to pay more attention to precise composition in figurative portraits. Oliver’s first art book, “Drawing the Head for Artists” was published August 2019 by Rockport. Oliver won an Exceptional Merit Award in the International Portrait Society’s portrait competition in April 2019 and was a finalist in 2020. He was chosen by Time Magazine in 2020 as the illustrator for two featured covers, one celebrating author Virginia Woolf. Samples of art can be reviewed at:
