Tues., Nov. 27 at 7 pm: Sharon Giles art demonstration: Marbling on Paper with Inks and Acrylics
Featured artist Sharon Giles, will demonstrate two simple forms of marbling paper using inks and acrylics on Tuesday, November 27th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m during the monthly Members’ meeting. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the meeting starts at 7:00 pm at the Jaycee Park Center for the Arts in Irving. Guests are welcome. Artists, please bring finger food for the potluck and don’t forget to bring your entry for the Artist of the Month competition. We will also have a Silent Auction of art supplies and books.
Suminagashi:
The oldest and simplest form of marbling paper comes from Japan and is known as Suminagashi, which means ‘ ink floating or spilled ink’. Sumi inks are applied to the surface of a pan of water. The floating colors are then carefully manipulated either by blowing on them directly or through a straw, fanning the colors, or carefully using a stick to stir the colors. Once the desired pattern is obtained, a thin paper is laid on the top of the colors, then removed, and laid aside to dry.
Acrylics on Liquid Starch:
Heavier paints than the Sumi inks require a heavier medium to float on, such as a thick “size” or viscous mucilage usually made from carrageenan or methylcellulose (or gum tragacanth as in traditional Ebru or Turkish marbling). An easier alternative is to use liquid starch. Acrylic inks, high flow acrylics or diluted acrylics can be used as the paint.
About the artist:
Sharon’s art interests include water media, collage, mixed media, marbling and printmaking (usually with a gelli plate.) She has also experimented with other media and teaches workshops in her major interests.
She was awarded Signature Status from the Society of Watercolor Artists, Southwestern Watercolor Society, and the Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition. Her artwork has won numerous awards in local competitions.
