The Space Between | Matt Clark and William Greiner

A collaborative series of paintings and photography   Artspace111 is honored to present The Space Between from January 19 through March 18, 2023. The Space Between is a collaboration between Fort Worth native abstract painter Matt Clark and nationally collected photographer William Greiner. With work focused on the abstract and organic, Matt Clark brings thoughtful design to the expertly captured landscape photography of William Greiner.   The series was theorized after a post-pandemic road trip, where the pair gained inspiration from the rugged elevations of New Mexico and the burnished highways of Texas. Clark and Greiner explore the space between abstract painting and representational photography by combining their respective mediums. The original photographs of the American West created by Greiner meet with acrylic painted patterns by Clark to create intricate routes through the composition. Exploring new means of collaboration, the duo delves into the space between past and present, need and want, the physical and spiritual, abstraction and representation. The resulting work is a landscape of abstracted pathways embracing nature. The mechanical medium of the camera combined with the abstract gestures of drawing results in dynamic and energetic compositions.  Alongside The Space Between, Matt Clark and William Greiner will each present a series of individually created work. Look West, by William Greiner is an ode to the history of photography of the American West. Since the invention of the camera, photographers have recorded the changes, development, and evolution of a vast geographical region. In a period of climate change, population rise, over development and massive human consumption. Look West, is an acknowledgment and record of these changes. Sacred Spaces, by Matt Clark, is a series of large-scale abstract paintings on canvas. The work is an exploration of our presence within space; physical, psychological, and spiritual. As individualized as the places we go to reflect and lift our spirits, these painted Sacred Spaces offer insights into ourselves and our surroundings.
“Matt Clark and William Greiner explore visceral landscapes through their exhibition The Space Between. Clark’s abstract painting breaks away from traditional representation while Greiner uses photography to fully embrace it. The result are compositions of movement and texture allowing familiar landscapes to come through while obscurity lingers between the sky, water, and unknown crevices.” -Margery Gossett, Gallery Owner, Artspace111

About Matt Clark   Matt Clark is a Dallas-based artist and Assistant Professor of Practice at University of Texas, Arlington. His work is included in over 25 international corporate collections and has been exhibited throughout the US since 2002. Clark is represented in Dallas by Conduit Gallery and in Fort Worth by Artspace111. Organically constructed, Clark’s work reveals the history of their making. Layers of paint: scraped, spread, sanded, poured, and compressed, reveal, and obscure the prior image, acting as a catalyst for his trust, faith, and determination in the creative process. The genesis of Clark’s work lies in how place and experience, both physically, psychologically, and spiritually inform us of ourselves and our surroundings.
