Have you ever been dissatisfied with your painting method, or perhaps found that initial excitement a “new” medium offered is fading? If you are wondering how painters can keep the creative energy alive for years or even decades, I will share the core of my own studio practice that has nurtured my efforts for nearly 40 years. This workshop will explore the possibilities that a counter intuitive approach to underpainting will have on the eventual finished work. We will consider working through a painting by establishing an abstract identity at the initial stage which will form the foundation upon which to build your image. Working from life, sketches or photographs (or any combination) we will build to a finished work reacting to the initial layers on the panel. This process is applicable to any subject or direction you wish to pursue. Ultimately your work can have a quality of richness and complexity stemming from an indirect approach. Every painting can have its own unique character giving your studio practice richness and excitement as well. – Dale Roberts |
