Fall Classes at Oil & Cotton: Sashiko, Winter Solstice Lettering, Natural Dyes

November 21 Exploring-Hand Stitching and Sashiko
Join Aaron Sanders Head for an exploration of hand-stitching and Sashiko! After a deep dive into the basic tools of stitching – thread, needles, fabric – participants will learn tips and tricks to create satisfying, even stitches on fabric for mending, embellishment, mixed media, or just for the sake of making. Participants will learn the basics behind hand-stitching, as well as several stitches and concepts from Sashiko stitching. 

December 19 Script Lettering + Line Drawing: Winter Solstice
Students will learn a quick and simple script alphabet and how to make an illustrated line drawing of a fall botanical. Andrea will guide you through drawing from her botanical specimens, or your can gather your own from home or nature walks and bring to class. This is a lovely class to share with friends. Leave with a field guide to continue your nature observations and meditations throughout the year.
December 11 Embroidery on Clothing 
Embellish your favorite piece of clothing with some stitching. This class is open to all levels and beginner-friendly. Students will learn how to confidently embroider on clothing with a variety of stitches. You will use adhesive, dissolvable fabric stabilizer to easily transfer an embroidery pattern onto clothing. Several original patterns will be provided for you to choose from. Students have the option of creating their own design; please draft a sketch before class. This class is BYOC, bring your own piece of clothing! An embroidery kit with everything else you need will be provided. 

January 29 Natural Dyes: Cutch
In the workshop participants will be introduced to the world of natural dyes. We will use Cutch natural dye extract to explore surface design in textiles! All participants will learn the basics of natural dyes, how to extract color for a cutch dye bath, natural dye vocabulary, material resources and how to prep cloth for the dye bath. Students will dye a handful of swatches, an organic tea towel, and an organic cotton bandana from Maiwa.

February 5 Coiled Baskets
Settle in for an afternoon in the studio and create a vessel for your home. We will touch on the basics of using natural dyeing and will use pre-dyed cotton fabric to coil a two-toned, medium sized bowl. No experience is necessary, and all materials are included in registration.
