Photographs made by the Booker T. Washington High School of Performing and Visual Arts Dance and Media class are featured in an upcoming gallery exhibition at Dallas Center for Photography (DCP). The exhibition, Photography and Dance, commences with a gallery reception free and open to all on Friday, July 16.
In the spring semester of 2021, DCP collaborated with the Booker T. Washington Dance and Media class in a workshop to explore the topic of photography and dance. Prompted by weekly assignments, students created captivating images representing not what dance looks like to other people but what dance feels like to them. The Photography and Dance exhibition is the culmination of that work. Accompanied by Dance and Media class instructor Alex Karigan Farrior, participating students were Bryn Bohanan, Riley Canterbury, Sloan Daley, Tamar Gabelev, Khyla Hassell, Madison Malonson, Kennedy Morrison, Mia Murphy, Lindsey Nikolai, and Olivia Wilson.
“DCP’s purpose is to encourage creativity and expression through photography” says Peter Poulides, founder and executive director of DCP. “Our collaboration with the students at Booker T. Washington was a perfect way for us to put that mission into practice. These young dancers created still images that captured the movement and personal experience of dance. Most of them used their smart phones which follows our belief that any camera, in any person’s hand, can tell meaningful stories. That is the power of photography.”
The in-person reception to celebrate the works from these students is Friday, July 16 from 5pm-8pm. Attendees are strongly encouraged to RSVP for a specific time slot as the number of people in the gallery at one time will be limited. Please view our COVID policies and procedures here. The Photography and Dance exhibition will run until Saturday, July 31. Gallery days and hours are Tuesdays and Fridays from 12pm-6pm and Saturdays 11am-3pm.

About Booker T. Washington Dance:
Celebrating excellence since 1976, the Booker T. Washington HSPVA Dance Department is one of the top dance programs in the country.
