About our Presenters:
Jonathan Norton(Panelist): Jonathan’s work has been produced or developed by Actors Theatre of Louisville (44th Humana Festival) Dallas Theater Center, Pyramid Theatre Company, PlayPenn, Black and Latino Playwrights Conference, Bishop Arts Theatre Center, Kitchen Dog Theater, Theatre Three, African American Repertory Theatre, Soul Rep, Undermain Theatre, National Performance Network, and National New Play Network. Jonathan’s play Mississippi Goddamn commissioned and produced by the South Dallas Cultural Center was a Finalist for the Harold and Mimi Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award and won the 2016 M. Elizabeth Osborn Award given by the American Theatre Critics Association. He is a proud two-time recipient of the TACA Donna Wilhelm Family New Works Fund and serves as Playwright in Residence at the Dallas Theater Center.
Lindsay Ripley, MD(Panelist): Dr. Ripley is originally from the Houston area and completed her medical school here at UT Southwestern. She then completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is passionate about providing patient-centered care and brings an interest in medical education and quality improvement. Outside of clinical medicine, she enjoys spending time with her family, reading, travel, and fitness.
Jaina Sanga, PhD (Panelist): Dr. Jaina Sanga is a professional writer of both fiction and non-fiction. Currently, she focuses on her fiction writing and has published a novel – Silk Fish Opium (2012), a book of short stories – Train to Bombay (2015), and a book of novellas – Tourist Season (2017). Jaina is also a literary scholar, having taught at SMU and the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. She is a Fellow of the Dallas Institute and also serves on the Board. She has published a book on Salman Rushdie, edited two volumes on South Asian literature, and authored several articles in scholarly journals in the U.S. and South Asia. She has made numerous presentations at academic conferences around the world, including those in Berlin, Mumbai, Trinidad, Cape Town, Madrid, Chicago, and San Francisco. Jaina has a B.A. from Hiram College in Ohio, an M.A. in English Literature from Kent State University, and a Ph.D. in English Literature from Case Western Reserve University. She was born in Mumbai and now lives in Dallas. She is currently working on her fourth book of fiction, a detective novel set in India. Besides her literary interests, Jaina is an avid Tango dancer.
Sonia Azad (Host): Sonia Azad is an Emmy® Award winning journalist and reporter at WFAA in Dallas, TX, specializing in health and wellness. In 2012, the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters named Sonia one of the best reporters in the state. And in 2017, the Texas Medical Association awarded Sonia for her series on Egg Freezing. Most recently, Sonia’s coverage spans fitness, nutrition, medical advancements & research, as well as public health and infectious disease, including Ebola, Zika, and CoVid-19. Sonia graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and she also holds a Master of Science degree in Journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Sonia is also a marathon finisher and certified yoga and meditation instructor.
