Third Space DFW is seeking works for the online viewing room version of its postponed art exhibition, Once a Day Swallow a Small Sun. We aim to provide a safe space for people to promote queer-friendly perspectives, art, and resources. The show will focus on reflections of the queer experience about health and well-being. This exhibition was inspired by a line from Sam Sax’s poem, On PrEP or on Prayer [“when i say pre-exposure prophylaxis”]:
“once a day swallow a small sun / & all hymn in you comes undone”
Our definition of what queer health means is open to allow artists to freely interpret this concept. We felt that there needed to be creative attention to this aspect of the queer experience because it is often a taboo topic to discuss within and outside of the community.
This exhibition was scheduled to be on view from May through June 2020 at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center. It is now postponed due to circumstances imposed by COVID-19 and the world pandemic.
Without any current prospects for showing the exhibition in real life, we wanted to bring a version of this art experience to our online platforms. We believe that queer artists should still have a voice in these difficult times.
The online format of the exhibition will be opening in December 2020. This exhibition will also be supplemented with a physical catalog book with more information on each artist.
This exhibition project has been partially funded with an artist grant through the support of the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas. We are hoping that we can continue with the exhibition at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center when life regains some sense of normalcy in the future.
