Marie Maines will continue her introduction to the basics of pastel. Completion of Pastel 1 or some basic knowledge of pastel is required.

Goals – To gain a comfort level with the use of the pastel medium to create a piece of art.

To acquire a knowledge of the elements of art (color, value, line, shape, texture, edges, and space) through the process of the creation of art with pastel – concentrating primarily on color and value.

The IAA Community Fine Art School Classes follow a progressive sequence where you will learn basic skills via instructor demo/lecture — exercise —-practice.

Each student is strongly encouraged to sign up for, and attend all four classes as each class topic and activity will be based on information from the preceding class. Registration is limited to 15 students per class, so please be sure that you can commit for the entire month of classes.

About the instructor:

Marie Maines is a retired first grade teacher, who has always wanted to be an artist ‘when I grow up’. She was born, raised and educated in Kentucky, receiving her BS degree from Murray State University in 1959. She taught in Florida, North Carolina and Indiana and went back to school for her MA degree from Indiana University/Purdue University in 1988. She retired after 25 years of teaching to become a full-time artist.

During her teaching career, she participated in as many art classes and workshops as possible and devoted summers to pursuing her art. As she moved closer to retirement, she began doing occasional local art fairs. After retirement, she and her husband, Ray, traveled the country, doing multiple art fairs each year and gleaning subjects for her paintings of landscapes – primarily those containing architectural structures.

She has garnered awards for her work in such venues as Pastel Society of America/New York, Pastel Society of the Southwest, Pastel Society of New Mexico, and Texas and Neighbors. She is a Signature Member of Pastel Society of America/New York, Pastel Society of the Southwest and Texas and Neighbors.

She currently lives near Fort Worth, Texas, to be close to family and continues to study and paint as she fulfills that lifelong dream of being a ‘real artist’.
